Australian trial of personalised vaccines to treat children with deadly brain cancers
A world-first clinical trial will test personalised mRNA vaccines in children with advanced brain tumours, a group for whom existing treatments too often fail. The PaedNEO-VAX study is backed by a $2.578 million Australian Government investment and will run across 8 paediatric hospitals in Australia.
Each child's tumour will be genome sequenced to find the mutations that distinguish the cancer from healthy tissue. Those mutations are used to design a vaccine for that individual patient, which is then manufactured and given to teach the immune system to recognise the tumour.
The trial draws on the full chain the Hub was built to provide: sequencing and neoantigen selection, vaccine design, manufacture, and delivery through paediatric clinical networks.
